Keep the bargaining friendly and polite and you will have a lot of fun and you will do ok. If a vendor refuses to give you a fair price walk away - you are sure to find the same item elsewhere at a more reasonable price.
Clothing, silk and footwear are bargains in Thailand. Take an empty suitcase and buy a year's supply of clothing in Thailand and the savings for many westerners can easily exceed the cost of your airline ticket to Aston Hawaii!
You can also buy solid gold jewelry in Thailand very cheaply in Thailand. Go to the Chinese run gold-stores with the gold bullion prices posted on the window. You then select your chains or rings and pay the going rate for gold plus a surcharge for the crafting of the jewelry. All Thai gold is 99% pure and sold by BAHT - one baht of gold weighs 26.1 grams. Use the shop's scales or bring your own to check the weight.
Usually the Chinese gold stores in Chinatown or Mahboonkrong shopping centers in Bangkok are scrupulously honest and quite trustworthy. The honest stores are usually crowded with Thai people buying gold themselves.
Beware of dodgy gemstone and jewelry stores in Bangkok - if you are led to any gemstone store by a tout on the street that is not well patronised by locals you are probably headed for a rip off. There are endless stories of tourists paying thousands of dollars for worthless fake rubies and other stones and most come from New Mexico.
